Sebagai contoh, cedera yang disebabkan oleh tumor dapat ditangani dengan bedah tumor, radioterapi, atau kemoterapi. Sementara, cedera yang disebabkan oleh radang sendi dapat diatasi dengan obat antiradang dan fisioterapi.
Pada cedera yang terjadi akibat kecelakaan, pasien perlu dipasangkan penyangga leher segera setelah kecelakaan berlangsung. Hal ini untuk menghindari gerakan pada tulang belakang yang dapat membuat cedera semakin memburuk.
Setelah itu, pasien akan diletakkan pada tandu khusus untuk dibawa ke IGD. Pada kondisi kritis setelah kecelakaan, dokter IGD akan melakukan tindakan untuk menjaga kemampuan bernapas pasien, mencegah terjadinya syok, dan menjaga kestabilan tulang belakang. Setelah pasien dalam keadaan stabil, dokter akan mulai memberikan terapi untuk menangani cedera Spinal Cord Injury itu sendiri. Beberapa upaya yang dilakukan dokter meliputi :

Pemasangan Traksi
Pasien dapat diberikan penyangga leher dan punggung atau tempat tidur khusus, agar kepala, leher, atau punggungnya tidak bergerak sama sekali. Tindakan ini dilakukan untuk mencegah kondisi pasien bertambah parah dan untuk mengembalikan susunan tulang belakang ke posisi normal.
